Mirai DTL-522P201 22”

May 29, 2008

Mirai have come up with an HD-ready 22” set that is an asset to the market. The DTL-522P100 is one of the first 22” screens available, and it really passes muster.

The 16:10 aspect ratio and 1440 x 900 resolution means you’ll get amazing detail, without being so cumbersome that it will look out of place in your kitchen or bedroom. The 22″ set can be mounted on a stand or wall, and has quality finishing.

ChroMAX circuitry means that you get realistic colour tones as well as total colour management. ChroMAX fine tunes colour saturation and brightness levels, filters out shadows and auto-corrects blurry edges. The DTL-522P100 is HD-ready so can display HD signals as well as standard digital and analogue.

The integrated 3 watt speakers are another bonus, as well as the 1000 page memory teletext facility. With viewing angles and five picture modes make for an all-round viewing experience. The picture quality means that the DTL-522P100 is great for gaming too.

Hitachi 42PD8700 42″

May 27, 2008

This 1024 x 1080 resolution model from Hitachi is great value for money. The screen provides stunning, vibrant colour and contrast. There are other models on the market for a similar price, but the Hitachi 42PD8700 takes the biscuit for picture quality.

One small drawback is that the connections face downwards instead of outwards. This can be slightly awkward, but once you’ve completed the set-up it won’t be a problem. The two SCART sockets are RGB enabled, but not capable of S-Video to SCART. The bass is good quality for such a thin screen but it does tend to overpower the mids and highs. This can be solved by using a surround sound system.

Hitachi’s design for this model is slightly retro, but this isn’t a drawback as the clean lines would look fantastic in any room. The classic design makes a nice change. The silver grill and trim edging make it a bit different from the norm.

Sony KDL20S3020 Review

May 6, 2008

Sony KDL20S3020 ReviewThis lovely little TV is the baby of the Sony Bravia range, perfect if you are looking for something smaller in your kitchen or bedroom.

It is beautifully put together with a silver metallic finish and a 1366 x 768 widescreen. It was also very easy to set up with its inbuilt digital freeview that was up and running with a minimum of fuss.

It is hard to beat the Bravia engine which creates such warm colours and crisp image clarity. There is very little colour bleed and it deals really well with action which makes it great for watching sports.

The sound from the Sony KDL20S3020 is pretty decent from such a small set, although you may notice the lack of deep bass. Having said that, in a TV of this size, the sound is about as good as you will get and it has a ‘dynamic’ setting that really improves it.

For such a small TV it also has quite a number of connections, which is great, including 1 HDMI, 2 Scart and 1 component connection so it can generally be hooked up to whichever whiz bang console or DVD player you might want.
